History
The Bernina Pass sits at 2,330 m and is most famous for its relationship to the Rhaetian Railway, which climbs the same valley on a parallel route with elaborate spiral viaducts. The cycling road parallels these engineering marvels, creating a unique dual-transportation experience.
The climb is 24 km from Poschiavo at 5.5% average, a steady endurance climb through Alpine terrain with excellent road quality. The views of glaciated peaks and mountain landscape are extensive from higher elevations.
The pass connects Switzerland with Italy and is a key cycling route for those traversing the Eastern Alps. The combination of railway parallels, good road quality, and scenic views make it a complete Alpine crossing experience.
